The grass is green, the birds are back, and the days are longer: summer must be close. This summer, I’m looking to build myself a better work wardrobe. I still want to make some pieces that are just for fun, though! If you’re looking to make yourself some pieces that are on-trend and adorable, good news. I’ve got a whole bunch of ideas for you! From trend suggestions to pattern recommendations to fabric options, it’s allllllll here. Let’s get into those summer 2017 trends!
Just so you know, inspiration images are linked back to their pin, fabric is linked directly to the source, and patterns are linked to Indiesew. Both the fabric and patterns are also on my pinboard, I just figured this would make it easier for you to shop!

Tassels & Pom Poms
Summer seems like a season when we all get to be kind of childish again (in a fun way!). One way you can relive your early years this summer is by adding tassels and pom poms to your clothes! I suggested this as a way to personalize your Bridgetown dress for April’s Project #sewmystyle challenge. If you didn’t take me up on that option, I definitely encourage you to find a place to work them in. They’re just so fun!
Off the Shoulder Tops
I mean, if there’s ever a time to expose your shoulders, it’s summer, right? Cold shoulder tops were all over the place this fall and winter. Their warm weather cousin, off the shoulder, was a hit last summer, so let’s bring a good thing back!
I love stripes, and I’m always excited when summer brings them. While I wear them all around, summer seems like an even more appropriate time for this pattern. Maybe it’s that they bring just a little nautical feel, or just that bright contrast of colors. But stripes feel super summery to me and I can’t wait to make myself a few pieces to fulfill my stripey dreams!
You guys. Embroidery. Is. Everywhere. I mean, making your own clothes is super impressive, we’re all in agreement here. But taking the extra step to embroider them yourself, too? That’s taking it to the next level. And on the other hand, you can use embroidery to make something you bought ready to wear seem more ~you~. Don’t know how to start embroidery? I got ya covered! Check out my post on hand embroidery tools and set up, and the follow up one with stitches and a free pattern!
You know something’s in when it has its own Instagram challenge! This summer, @rocco.siena, @sewsarahsmith, and @sewing_in_spain are hosting the #SewTogetherforSummer challenge. Participants are asked to sew a shirtdress of their choice and post it to Instagram with the hashtag for the chance to win some prizes!
I shared Pantone’s spring/summer color palette in my spring inspiration post back in January, but here it is again. Bright pink isn’t really my color, but I’m desperate to find a way to make it work for me! It just looks so cheerful. Here’s some fabric options for a couple of Pantone’s top pick colors.
Make it Yourself!
Okay y’all, time for the grand finale: the make it yourself section! I’ve found a few photos on Pinterest that I think you could recreate yourself pretty easily. Keep on scrolling to see the inspiration with pattern and fabric suggestions!
