The Best Hashtags for Sewing Instagrams

Did you know the average Instagram account gets 4% engagement on their posts?  Sit with that for a moment.  Four percent.  Four.  Percent.  That’s… not a lot.  Now, go to your latest Instagram post (and if you don’t have one, you can borrow my latest post for this!).  Divide the likes on the photo by the number of followers, and multiply by 100 — that’s the percent engagement that post got.  Where are you sitting?  I like this little exercise, because it often makes me feel better about myself, tbqh, and also because it’s a great motivator.  Seven percent on this post?  I can do eight percent tomorrow!  And one super awesome way to drive up engagement on your Instagram posts is to use the best hashtags for sewing Instagrams.

Today I’m not only sharing over 120 of the best hashtags for sewists and makers on Instagram, I’m also giving you my top tip for making them easy to use!  This post looks super long, but I promise it’s mostly the lists ;).

The Best Hashtags for Sewing Instagrams

Finding Awesome Sewing Hashtags

If you search “best Instagram hashtags” on Pinterest (cause you know I did!), you turn up a ton of results.  Unfortunately — they’re not all that useful for sewing accounts, since they’re more oriented towards lifestyle bloggers/users.

Remember last time when I told you to pay attention to what hashtags (if any) your favorite sewing Instagrammers are using right now?  That’s actually how I found most of the hashtags I use.  Let’s break out that list and chat! We’ll use some of the ones I put on an outfit post as an example right now.  My hashtags for those could generally be put into three categories: general DIY/maker, sewing, and ~personal~.

And Don’t Forget…

One of the best ways to gain followers is to participate in themed monthly challenges!  Three of the largest ones are #MeMadeMay, #SewPhotoHop (September), and #BPSewvember (November).  The latter two have prompts assigned to their day, which can be a fun way to learn more about the people you follow!  Lots of other themed challenges pop up during the year, too.  You could even start one of your own!

Remember, the best way to gain followers from hashtags is to participate in them.  Scroll through the ones you’re using and like some of them!  Especially with the themed months in the sewing community, hashtags can drive a ton of traffic to your account.

Easily Add Hashtags to Posts

The hardest thing about hashtags would theoretically be adding them to your post.  Having to remember all the good ones and then typing them all out in a comment?  No thanks!  There are two easy ways to add hashtags to all your posts.

My preferred method is text replacement.  I’ve created shortcuts in my phone for groups of hashtags.  Then when I want to add them, all I have to do is type in that shortcut!  Just be sure you’re using a shortcut you’d never mean to type.  Mine start with three hashtags because I could definitely see myself accidentally typing two.  If you’re adding multiple groups, make sure you’re using less than 30, even if you have to delete some.  My usual lists total more than 30, so I try and vary the ones I’m deleting for maximum exposure.

The other trick would be to copy and paste all your hashtags from a note on your phone.  That means you’re flipping between apps, but it’s a small price to pay for hashtag heaven if your phone doesn’t have text replacement!

I used to keep my hashtags in my notes on my phone before I remembered text replacement was a thing (I use a few different ones now). Just copy and paste!

Okay, this might be the “longest” post I’ve ever written.  But those 120+ hashtags really stretch it out!  Did I miss your favorite hashtag?  Drop it in the comments!  And don’t forget to follow my Sewing Blogger 101 board over on Pinterest!

  2. I’m a little late to the party, but thank you SO much for the text replacement trick! I’ve just recently started a blog and Insta account for my sewing projects, and this is going to save me a ton of time and make posting way easier. I’ve really enjoyed catching up on this series.

    1. It’s my favorite time saver! So happy you’ve found the series helpful!
